Junior Optimists (JOI) – Year-Round Youth Leadership Clubs

National JOI Website →

Since 1988, Junior Optimist International (JOI) has connected local youth clubs with others across the globe, empowering students through service, leadership, and community engagement. The Huron Valley Optimists proudly sponsor JOI clubs at Milford High School in Highland and Lakeland High School in White Lake—both supported by strong student membership and dedicated teacher advisors.

Leadership training is enhanced through Students Leading Students with support from the Huron Valley Coalition, which works to help youth make healthy life choices and prevent substance abuse. The Coalition also assists with international dues, ensuring members have access to opportunities such as scholarships, global events, and leadership training.

JOI members fund their own projects through club-led fundraising efforts.

Benefits of Joining JOI:

  • Practice good citizenship, teamwork, communication, and money management
  • Build confidence, self-esteem, and lasting friendships
  • Take on leadership roles at club, district, and international levels
  • Develop kindness, cultural awareness, and community service skills
  • Earn high school service hours and potentially qualify for an honor cord to wear at graduation

JOI is more than a club—it’s a pathway to personal growth, community impact, and a lifetime of optimism.
